Zoosk was originally launched as a dating application on Facebook in 2003 but has since grown to be one of the largest free online dating sites around. Over 50 million profiles have been created at Zoosk, and the site is available in more than 25 different languages. It is very much an international dating site and has subscribers from many different parts of the world.

You can sign up, browse other profiles and reply to messages for free and there is also a premium subscription available which gives access to some extra features. We have provided a brief overview of the site below, along with more details on exactly what is on offer.

Zoosk has remained true to its roots and the whole interface feels more like a social networking site than a dating site. The site is really focused on the fun aspects of meeting new people, and is more for people interested in casual dating and making new friends rather than anyone looking to find a serious relationship. The growth of Zoosk has been huge, and the site continues to grow at an impressive rate. New members are joining every day and the number of Zooskers (this is the term used to describe member) is increasing all the time.

Because Zoosk started out as a Facebook application it is often assumed that it is primarily for the younger generation. The site is certainly popular with people in their late teens and twenties, but there also plenty of Zooskers in their thirties and forties and even older. The membership is a very diverse one, with a wide range of people from varying backgrounds. There are so many members that, wherever you live, the chances are there are plenty of Zooskers relatively close to you.

This is one of the simplest dating sites there is, and everything is incredibly easy to use. There is no matchmaking system that returns potentially compatible matches based on your profile, the site is based entirely on searching for other members and contacting those that interest you.

If you're a free member you cannot send the first message to another member, but you can reply to any paid members that contacts you. You can also send winks to anyone that grabs your attention, so it is easy enough to initiate some communication even as a free member.

Functionality & Features

Zoosk is not really big on advanced features and seems to focus primarily on just making the basics work as well as possible with an emphasis on ease of use. When you first join you have to fill out a form with a few personal details. This takes less than a minute and is about as straightforward as it gets.

You'll then be asked to add some details to your dating profile, and again this doesn’t take very long at all. The profiles at Zoosk tend to be much less detailed than at most dating sites, with most members just adding basic information such as age, gender, location along with a photo.

You do have the option to include more details if you want; there is a free text “About You” section where you can include whatever you want and a “Your Perfect Match” section where you can describe the kind of person you are ideally looking for. There are also various sections about your interests and likes, such as your favorite books, movies and music. Additionally, you can add a number of questions to your profile for other members to answer when they contact you.

Because you don’t automatically receive potential matches, it is down to you to browse through profiles and identify the ones that interest you. Again, this is very simple to do. There is a basic search option where you specify the age range you are looking and the acceptable distance from your location. If you want to be more precise, the advanced search lets you search for a range of criteria that is important to you.

Paid Options

You can become a premium member at Zoosk for $29.95 a month. You can save money on the monthly cost by paying for three months at a time ($19.95 per month) or twelve month at a time ($9.99 per month). As a premium member, you will be to send messages to anyone on the site and both paid and free members will be able to reply to you. You’ll also be able to see how has viewed your profile and will have access to the online chat feature.

Why We Recommend Zoosk

Zoosk is one of the simplest and easiest to use free dating sites there is, and also one of the biggest. It is probably not the best option if you are looking for a serious relationship, but if you are interested in casual dating or just meeting new people in your area then Zoosk is without doubt well worth a go.

Even though you can’t send the first message to someone as a free member, the fact that you can send winks means you can still show your interest. Zoosk is well integrated with social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, and also has a free iPhone application.
